WHO ARE WE?

The Dalmatian Club of America Foundation (DCAF) is a 5013c organization comprised of Dalmatian Club of America members with the purpose of funding health research projects for the benefit of the Dalmatian breed and all canine breeds.

We have various fundraising campaigns each year in order to help fund research projects that are vetted through the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation. For more specific information on the projects we have funded please see DCAF Funded Research Studies page.

MISSION STATEMENT

Advancing the health and quality of life for Dalmatians and all dogs through supported research and education.

PURPOSES OF THE FOUNDATION

  1. To foster and promote the public’s knowledge and appreciation of dogs in general and DALMATIANS in particular.

  2. To further understanding of the diseases, genetic anomalies and injuries which affect dogs in general and the DALMATIAN in particular.

  3. To support and promote study of and research on the character, history, genetics, diseases, breeding and related characteristics which establish the DALMATIAN as a distinct breed of dog and as a consequence, establish a data base of educational and resource materials on the DALMATIAN.

  4. To develop and make available to the general public and DALMATIAN fanciers in particular, information about the proper care, treatment, breeding, health, development and training of DALMATIANS.

TO ADVANCE THESE PURPOSES, THE FOUNDATION WILL GRANT PROJECTS IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS:

  • LIBRARY AND COMMUNICATIONS
  • GENERAL RESEARCH
  • DALMATIAN RELATED

Grants will be made ONLY to organizations that commit to providing evaluation reports.

RESEARCH FUNDING

DCAF, in partnership with the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation, the Dalmatian Club of America and other breed clubs and organizations have funded over 20 health research projects with Total of Grants of $1,164,326.00 and total Research Support by DCAF in the amount of $204,433.75.

PUBLICATIONS AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES FUNDED

AKC Parent Club Health Conference
DCAF has contributed by covering travel expenses and sending a DCAF participant to the AKC parent Club conference each year, since the inception of the Parent Club Conference in 2002. We plan to continue this worthwhile endeavor. DCAF Funding: $900 (Approximate).
Urinary Stone Pamphlet
DCAF funded the printing and mailing of the Urinary Stone Pamphlet to the entire DCA membership. The pamphlet was also sent to Dalmatian Clubs in other countries. The pamphlet has been particularly useful as a hand out to Veterinarians for their use in the explanation of and information on stone disease. DCAF Funding: $11,000.00 (approximate).
Dalmatian Health Survey
DCAF funded the printing, mailing and the data collection analysis of the Health Survey on Dalmatians.  Through this survey we were able to determine the prevalence of various Dalmatian related diseases and disorders.  The results from this survey are being used to help us determine which grants to fund. DCAF Funding: $1,528.00
Dalmatian Health Clinics at the National Specialty
DCAF funds a large portion of health clinics that are conducted in conjunction with the DCA National Specialty Show. DCAF underwrites these tests to keep them reasonably priced.. Tests included may be Eye Exam, Thyroid, BAER, Cardiac Ausultation, DNA Blood Draw and Microchip. DCAF Funding: $5,000 (Estimate).
OFA Hearing Registration
DCAF is funding the collection of BAER hearing results on entire litters for the OFA hearing database. When a DCA member breeder has an entire litter of puppies BAER hearing tested they can submit the results to OFA and have the litter registered at no cost to the breeder. This grant should cover all litters registered by DCA members for the next 2 or 3 years. DCAF Funding: $2,000.
Educational Speakers
DCAF has funded speakers that were invited to address the DCA membership at the National Specialty Show on topics of interest to the fancy. DCAF Funding: $5,000 (Approximate).
Membership Education Booklet
DCAF has funded the development and publication of a membership education booklet that covers a broad range of health topics related to the Dalmatian, as well as education materials. This booklet was distributed to the entire DCA membership. DCAF Funding: $3,000 (Approximate).
RESCUE ACTIVITIES FUNDED BY DCAF
DCAF, on an ongoing basis, offers financial support to DCARE the Dalmatian Club of America Rescue Education.  The goal of DCARE is to help increase the likelihood of successful rescue placements and to ensure that the placements are in the best interest of the public, the dog and the breed. DCAF and DCA Funded $1,000. as seed money for Rescue. Additional contributions allowed for a total of $1,752. to have been spent by DCARE for rescue efforts to date.
